Assassinations in Mexico are highly driven by organized crime motives. These are mainly killings related to territorial control for drugs and extortion markets, but also other illicit economies such as illegal logging. In a great proportion of cases, the victims are unidentified, but a hit or organized crime execution style assassination is reported by national sources. The largest target group in Mexico belongs to the security sector, largely due to the killings of law enforcement personnel - usually while off-duty - either for ther investigative work or their involvement in illicit activities.
