Despite limitations to freedom of movement in many countries, the Global Monitor database recorded a total of 772 assassinations and assassination attempts for 2019 and 2020. While assassinations were highest in the Americas and Asia, regional concentrations were found across most continents. Firearms were the preferred weapon. Most of these assassinations were driven by political and organized crime related motives. Members of the local community, such as activists and community leaders, were targeted the most.
